I think everyone should learn to play at least one musical instrument in their lifetime. You just need to find one that really speaks to you, be it a saxophone, ukulele or didgeridoo. Personally, I don’t have the patience to learn to read sheet music or memorize chords, theory, fingering, etc. as it goes with most musical instruments, so the didgeridoo is what clicked for me.

You may hear people say that playing the didgeridoo is hard, but I think those folks are hung up on the circular breathing technique used by advanced didgeridoo players. This is a slight-of-breath trick that all didge players learn eventually (enabling them to keep a constant drone while breathing), but beginners should focus only on the simple basics first; drone clarity, breath control, vocal accents, tongue movement, and creating rhythmic patterns.

The didgeridoo is actually one of the easiest wind instruments you could ever learn to play. There is no hard blowing like there is with a horn, in fact, your breath flows as slowly as playing a flute. The trick is in the lips, not the lungs. A slow, loose, continuous vibration of the lips into the mouthpiece of a didgeridoo will produce a deep, hauntingly beautiful drone. You only get one note, so you play rhythm instead of melody. A bit like beat boxing.

The pitch, or key, of any didgeridoo is determined mostly by its length. Longer didgeridoos offer a lower pitch, whilst shorter instruments deliver a high pitch.

The average length of a didgeridoo is 4 to 5 feet. Don’t confuse the didgeridoo with the super long Alpenhorn that’s played in the mountains of Switzerland… wrong continent, mate. The didgeridoo originated in Australia where it is still played in traditional ceremony by the aboriginal people of Arnhem Land in Australia’s remote Northern Territory.

Played as a rhythm instrument to accompany song and dance, the stories of its origins “down under” are intriguing. And because the early aboriginal people had no written language, their Dreamtime stories have been retold verbally, through paintings, and in song for centuries. A quick web search will suss out thousands of different versions of Australian aboriginal lore.

You often hear that the didgeridoo is the oldest musical instrument on the planet, but that’s simply not true by any stretch of the imagination. You also hear that it’s 40,000 years old. Also not true. The aboriginal people have been in Australia for at least that long, but the didgeridoo evolved much later, as early as 1,500 years ago.

Other misinformation surrounding the didgeridoo involves a taboo that women should never touch or play one. In short, the didgeridoo, or yidaki as it’s called in northern Arnhem Land, is only played by men in traditional ceremony. Whilst there have been exceptions to the rule from time to time, this applies only to the use of the didgeridoo during men’s business, or sacred ceremony where only men are in conference…

Outside of ceremonial use, the didgeridoo is not only played by some aboriginal women (usually just for fun), but they also make and decorate them as well. In fact, it’s safe to say that most didgeridoos crafted for the tourist and export market are painted by women. When you hear the sound of the didgeridoo played well it’s easy to conjure up images of noble savages and their magic, but in reality the didgeridoo is many things to different people. Even among the aboriginal people themselves, especially those that live far from didgeridoo country (Arnhem Land), the shared stories and concepts of aboriginal “law” are varied and vague.

That said, people around the world have embraced the gift of the didgeridoo from this rich and dignified culture. Buying didgeridoos made by aboriginal crafters and artists not only support the families of these people, but also help to sustain the world’s oldest living culture.

Today, didgeridoos are played in rock bands, orchestras, school clubs, coffee houses, living rooms and yoga studios. It is used for “vibrational healing” alongside crystal bowls and tuning forks. It is played purely for fun and also as a vehicle for meditation. People take their didgeridoos camping, backpacking, and to drum circles or jam sessions with friends.

Most interestingly, the didgeridoo is used to successfully treat Sleep Apnea and chronic snoring. Sleep Apnea is a condition where people stop breathing during sleep, and wake up gasping for breath throughout the night. Clinically speaking, playing the didgeridoo is the only curative therapy for Sleep Apnea. All other treatments, like wearing a CPAP mask and hose to bed each night, only temporarily cover up the symptoms and must be used every night for a lifetime.
